Directing a rehearsal of 'The Sand House' at Cast Theatre
Professional Actor, Teacher & Director
I have been working as a professional actor, teacher and theatre director for over thirty years. I did a Drama degree at UEA and then studied Movement Theatre with Tessa Marwick and Paul Versteeg as part of Baraka Theatre in Zurich.
I trained in classical singing from the age of 14 with a number of private teachers, including Barbara Hauser.
My own lifelong learning includes Feldenkrais classes and workshops and Intelligent Movement immersions. I am fascinated by how the body, the breath and the voice can be used as expressive tools, both in acting work and in life. For the past three years I have also been part of Mike Alfred’s Acting Lab, exploring his detailed methods of work.
As an actor I have worked with companies such as the RSC, The National Theatre and The Royal Exchange, Manchester. Extensive TV experience includes roles in “Bodyguard”, “Happy Valley”, ‘Silent Witness” and ‘Poirot”.
I am a regular contributor to Radio 4 drama, including roles in “A Winter’s Tale”, “Bright Day”, and “The Threepenny Opera.”
As a theatre director I have worked regularly with M6 Theatre Company, directing work for a national tour of mid-scale venues, schools and prisons. Also directing filmed versions of two of their monologues. I have directed touring work for Mikron Theatre and recently made my own work, “Sand House” at Cast Theatre in Doncaster. I have also recently directed two radio plays for Leeds University. Drama training directing includes four devised pieces and plays such as “A Family Affair”, “Three Sisters” and “Twelfth Night”.
I have taught and directed work at the Universities of Huddersfield, Manchester, Nottingham, Salford and Bolton. Group workshops include sessions in many community settings such as day centres, hospitals, prisons, drama clubs, amateur dramatic companies and schools.
I have worked as an examiner at The Urdang Academy, London, The Universities of Salford and Bolton and for Trinity College London as a graded exams assessor.
I had a vocal session with Olwen to help me prepare for a one woman show at the Edinburgh Festival. I was concerned about vocal tiredness, performance anxiety and tension. The session with Olwen was vital. She led me through relaxation techniques and gently reminded me of the connection to breath, resonance and articulation. Her calm knowledgable approach made me feel instantly safe and confident in her hands. She is a beautiful practitioner and I recommend even the most experienced actors to refresh their techniques with Olwen.
